This is a great little player with a great picture, at least while it lasts. Plays DVD-Rs made with DVDShrink consistently (although the manual doesn't say it supports DVD-R and sometimes it reports "no valid disc" on the first spin up...on retry, it plays). Will not consistently play DVD+Rs, HP branded ones anyway (also made with DVDShrink). Other reviewers are right in that the sound from the unit itself is tinny and quiet - you do need headphones, preferably amplified and noise-canceling but those are cheap these days. The bummer was that after about a total of about a dozen hours of use I turned it off for about 10 minutes, then came back and turned it back on and nothing happened except the power light lit up. No screen display, no disc spin up, no response to the remote or to the buttons on the unit. Tried again over the next couple of days with the same result. So it didn't live long enough for me to check it with factory discs or check out the battery pack. Given the number of negative reviews about portable DVD players of all makes (DOAs and early deaths), I decided to return it without asking for a replacement...apparently the technology's not there yet, or not being applied to the portable items (Toshiba makes reliable laptops that can play DVDs of all flavors, so what's up with this?). Had high hopes for this guy.
