I started out looking for the $99 - $150 bargains, but after looking at some of these off-brand DVD portable players (with screens even larger than 7"), and checking many reviews, I decided to go with a brand I trust. Since I have a reliable Toshiba 32 inch TV at home (now 5 years old and going strong), I did my homework on the SD-P1600. I've had it now for about a month, and it works flawlessly. Picture resolution and quality is important to me. The Toshiba TFT 7" screen display (picture) on the SD-P1600 blew the socks off of the other players I looked at. It is excellent - and the one I bought is great (no dead pixels) . The size of this player is perfect for trips - especially if you're traveling with carry-on baggage on planes. Larger screens translate to significantly larger players to lug around. Keep that in mind.
The only negative are the speakers. The intensity/volume of the sound is poor - but so are most of the portable players. This does not detract from the 5 star rating. When you attach headphones (which is how you will typically use such players) the audio and sound quality is superb. More than enough volume to satisfy anyone.
This is a well-made player with plenty of features. I bought it for $189 (plus tax) at Target, but you can now get it (special sale) at Amazon for about $170 and free shipping! Highly recommended!
Don't go cheap. Spend a little more and get this gem.
